Building High-Quality Tutorials: A Guide for Technical Writers

Ccentron Redaktion · October 2024 ·6 min read ·Linux Basics, Tutorial

When creating technical articles related to server administration and software engineering, it's essential to maintain high standards in terms of style, structure, and accuracy. To help ensure a consistent experience for readers, we have developed a set of guidelines to assist authors in writing comprehensive and clear tutorials. These guidelines are designed to cater to both beginners and experienced professionals in the field.

Key Elements of Writing a Strong Technical Tutorial

There are four main areas to focus on when creating a tutorial:

  1. Style – Establishing a friendly but professional tone.
  2. Structure – Laying out the tutorial in a logical, step-by-step format.
  3. Formatting – Using proper markdown to ensure readability and easy execution of the provided instructions.
  4. Terminology – Using clear and standardized terms for commands, software, and configurations.

By following these guidelines, you will ensure that your tutorial is accessible, useful, and technically accurate.

Writing Style

The goal of your tutorial should be to teach readers of all skill levels. This involves explaining concepts thoroughly, providing accurate instructions, and avoiding assumptions about the reader's background. Here are some tips to ensure a high-quality tutorial:

  • Comprehensive for All Experience Levels: Tutorials should be written as clearly and thoroughly as possible. Assume that the reader is unfamiliar with certain technical concepts, and take the time to explain each step.

For instance, when asking a user to make an SSH connection, include both the command and an explanation of how it works:

Console
ssh user@your_server_ip

This command opens a secure connection to your server at the IP address provided. The user is your username on the server, and your_server_ip is the address of your server.

  • Technically Detailed and Correct: Ensure every instruction is precise and follows industry best practices. Avoid vague commands or large blocks of code that are not explained. Always describe why the user is executing a command or making a change, ensuring they understand how it contributes to the overall goal.

For example, if the tutorial includes a configuration change, you should explain each element:

Code
nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/default

Update the server_name directive to match your domain:

Code
server_name your_domain;

This change tells Nginx which domain to listen to when handling web requests.

  • Practical and Self-Contained: Your tutorial should guide the reader from start to finish, ensuring that by the end, they have accomplished a specific goal. If your topic requires prior knowledge or setup (e.g., installing software or setting up a server), provide clear instructions or links to resources where readers can find the information they need to proceed.
  • Friendly but Formal: While tutorials should be approachable, it’s important to maintain a professional tone. Avoid excessive slang, jargon, or informal language that could confuse readers or distract from the tutorial's focus.

Structure of Technical Tutorials

Most technical tutorials will follow a procedural structure, which walks readers through a task step by step. Here is a general structure for your article:

  1. Title: Be specific about the goal. Instead of "Using Docker," try "How to Deploy a Node.js Application with Docker."
  2. Introduction: Provide a brief summary of what the reader will accomplish and why it’s valuable. Keep the reader’s goals in mind and use motivating language, such as "In this tutorial, you will learn to deploy a scalable Node.js application using Docker."
  3. Prerequisites: List the tools or skills needed before starting the tutorial. If prior setup is required, provide links or instructions for setting it up.
  4. Steps: Break down the task into manageable steps. Begin each step with a numbered header (e.g., Step 1 – Setting Up Your Environment), followed by clear instructions. Include all necessary commands and code snippets, and explain the purpose of each one.
  5. Conclusion: Summarize what the reader has achieved. Highlight any next steps they can take or additional resources they may want to explore.

Formatting

Using Markdown to properly format your tutorial ensures that it is easy to read and follow. Key formatting rules include:

  • Headers: Use headers to break your article into sections. The tutorial title should be an H1 heading, major sections should use H2, and subsections should use H3.
  • Code Blocks: All commands should be placed in distinct code blocks, and explanations should follow immediately after. This helps readers understand what each command does.

Example:

Console
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

This command updates your system’s package list and upgrades all installed packages to the latest version.

  • Highlight Variables: Use highlighting to emphasize variables or user-specific elements that need to be changed (e.g., your_domain or your_server_ip).

Terminology

When writing tutorials, ensure that you use consistent terminology. For example, when referring to usernames, default to using generic names like user. For domains and IP addresses, use your_domain or your_server_ip to make it clear that these are placeholders to be customized by the reader.
