Sustainability – Taking responsibility

Cloud with Responsibility

Our data centre is designed to the highest environmental standards and is powered entirely by green electricity – as demonstrated by the regular recertification of our environmental management system to ISO 14001.

Our levers

Our environmentally friendly data centre

IT from centron is green IT – guaranteed by the regular recertification of our environmental management system to ISO 14001.

100% green electricity

We operate our centron data centre – including air-conditioning, lighting and the adjoining office space – exclusively on green electricity.

Outdoor air cooling & aisle enclosure

Thanks to efficient cooling using outside air, our data centre manages without active cooling 95 per cent of the time. Cold/hot aisle containment physically prevents hot and cold air from mixing.

Highly efficient hardware and software

We use only highly efficient, branded hardware with energy-saving processors. Our Linux-based software stack, virtualisation and containers significantly reduce the total number of servers.

Recycling of end-of-life systems

A professional service provider recycles our end-of-life systems and returns valuable resources, such as precious metals, to the value chain – in 2021, 124.1 tonnes of hardware were recycled, thereby preventing over 226 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

Beyond the data centre

Our sustainability initiatives

We encourage our staff to do their bit – from working remotely to recycling old hardware. We are happy to support you with data and information on the operation of your environment for your own sustainability reports.

Sustainability FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Sustainability

Is the cloud more sustainable than running your own servers?

As a general rule, yes: professional data centres cool more efficiently and utilise hardware capacity much more effectively than individual servers in offices or basements – so the same workload results in lower energy consumption.

How does centron keep energy consumption low?

Through 100% green electricity, outside air cooling (95% of the year without active cooling), hot/cold aisle containment, highly efficient branded hardware, as well as virtualisation and containers, which reduce the total number of servers. For cooling, we also utilise data science, machine learning and adiabatic cooling.

Do we receive information for our ESG reporting?

Yes – please get in touch with our team. We can provide information on the operation of your environment, which you can use for your reports.
