Cloud Desktop: Your Windows workspace in the office, at home and on the move

With a cloud desktop, your Windows applications no longer run on the server in your office but in the data centre. Your employees sign in via a Remote Desktop client and work in the office, from home or at another location with the same applications and files. We take care of servers, licences, backup and operations, in our own data centre in Hallstadt near Bamberg, Germany.

Starting price from 20 users, net, plus VAT and backup storage, no minimum term.

Cloud desktop: the basics

What is a cloud desktop?

A cloud desktop is a Windows workspace that runs in the data centre instead of on your own computer. Only the connection runs on the end device; applications and files are stored centrally. Other common terms are virtual desktop, virtual workplace and Desktop as a Service (DaaS).

With the centron Remote Workplace, your team works on terminal servers with Microsoft Remote Desktop Services. Each person has their own session, and several sessions share one server. The terminal servers run as virtual machines in our ccloud³, and we handle operations with Premium Full Managing. This setup is designed for office applications, ERP and industry software. For graphics-intensive work, there are dedicated GPU workstations: CAD in the cloud.

Cloud desktop: use cases

When a cloud desktop pays off

The server in your office needs replacing.

Instead of buying new hardware, you move servers and desktops to the data centre. You no longer need a server room, and we take care of hardware maintenance and replacement.

Windows Server 2016 is reaching end of support.

Extended support for Windows Server 2016 ends on 13 January 2027. If you have to migrate anyway, you can move servers and desktops in one step.

Working from home and multiple locations.

Everyone works in the same environment, wherever they are. Applications and files are stored centrally in the data centre instead of being spread across individual laptops. You decide which data may be transferred to end devices.

Cloud desktop: prices

How much does a cloud desktop cost?

You pay a fixed monthly price per terminal server, one Remote Desktop licence per user and backup storage based on usage. There is no minimum term. How many terminal servers you need depends on your applications and the load, not rigidly on the number of users. Three example calculations for office users show the range; we calculate your quote for your environment.

10 users 20 users 40 users
Terminal servers 2 3 6
Monthly price €477.16 €767.64 €1,535.28
Per user €47.72 €38.38 €38.38

Included in every example:

  • Terminal servers and operations with Premium Full Managing
  • Windows and Remote Desktop licences
  • Updates and monitoring around the clock

Example calculations for office users, net, plus VAT, as of October 2026. Prices per user rounded to the cent. Backup storage is added based on usage (€0.03687 per GB per month; for example, 100 GB costs €3.69). Microsoft Office is available on request. Setup and migration are not included in the monthly price; we list them separately in the quote.

How the price is made up

Component Monthly price
Computing power and storage: 12 vCPU, 48 GB RAM, 300 GB SSD €81.24
Premium Full Managing: operations, updates, monitoring, support €50.00
Windows Server licence (6 × 2 cores at €9.24) €55.44
Per terminal server €186.68
Remote Desktop licence per user €10.38
Backup storage (Managed Backup) €0.03687 per GB

Example for 10 users: 2 terminal servers at €186.68 plus 10 Remote Desktop licences at €10.38 comes to €477.16 per month, plus backup storage. Servers and users are billed separately: one terminal server can also serve more users than in the examples, so when employees join, often only the user licences go up. With a quota, you commit to a fixed amount of computing power and storage for 12, 24 or 36 months and get a discount of 10, 20 or 30 % on it. With a 36-month quota, the price per user in the 20-user example drops from €38.38 to €34.73. You can also find the prices for computing power, storage and operations in our price overview.

Cloud desktop: migration

How the migration works

1. Assessment

We look at your applications, data, users, printers and interfaces. We also clarify which tasks remain with your team or IT service provider.

2. Setup and testing

We set up the environment. Selected employees test typical workflows with real data, including printing and scanning.

3. Switchover

The date, possible interruptions and a fallback plan are agreed in advance.

4. Operations

After acceptance, we take over the agreed operations. You have a personal contact.

Cloud desktop FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the cloud desktop

Is a cloud desktop the same as Desktop as a Service?

In everyday use, yes: both terms describe a desktop that is delivered as a service from the data centre. Technically, there are two approaches: a separate virtual machine per person, or shared terminal servers with separate sessions. The centron Remote Workplace uses terminal servers. The servers are shared, which suits office and industry software.

How is this different from renting a terminal server?

Technically, there is no difference: it is the same environment. Here, we break the price down per user. The same calculation also works per server, which is often the more familiar view for IT departments and IT service providers.

How is billing done?

Monthly: a fixed amount per terminal server for computing power, operations and the Windows licence, plus one Remote Desktop licence per user and backup storage based on usage. We list setup and migration separately in the quote.

Is there a minimum term?

No. If you commit to a fixed amount of computing power and storage for 12, 24 or 36 months through a quota, you get a discount of 10, 20 or 30 % on it. With a 36-month quota, one user in the 20-user example then costs €34.73 instead of €38.38.

Can we add users later?

Yes. Each additional user needs a Remote Desktop licence for €10.38 per month. Another terminal server is only added when the load requires it.

What happens if our internet connection fails?

Then access to the cloud desktop is interrupted, while the servers in the data centre keep running. Saved files remain in the data centre. Whether an open session is kept depends on the session settings. As a fallback, we recommend a second line or a mobile router. Employees can also work from home during that time.

Do our printers and scanners work?

Printers at the workstation and network printers in your offices can be connected. For scanners, it depends on the device, the driver and the Remote Desktop client. That is why we check device by device during the assessment and test printing and scanning workflows before the switchover.

Does our industry software run?

As a rule, yes, if the vendor supports operation on Windows Server and terminal servers. We clarify this with you before the quote and, if necessary, with the vendor.

Can we work with a Mac, tablet or private PC?

Yes. Microsoft offers Remote Desktop apps for Windows, macOS, iPadOS and Android. Applications and files stay in the data centre. You define in your policies whether employees may copy files to their device or use the clipboard.

Is Microsoft Office included?

No, Office is optional. Edition, usage rights and price are set out in the quote.

We have an IT service provider on site. Will they stay involved?

Yes. Your provider remains your contact in the office, and we run the platform. IT service providers can work with us through the channel partner programme.

We work with CAD or video editing. Does that work too?

That requires workstations with a GPU. We plan this as a separate project; see CAD in the cloud.
