Providers often advertise low prices per gigabyte but charge for outgoing traffic separately. With data-intensive applications, that charge can quickly exceed the cost of storage many times over – which is why the gigabyte price is not what decides it, but the total bill. centron does not charge for outgoing traffic at all.

Calculation example

1 TB backup archive

1,000 GB × €0.02 = €20 per month. If the archive is restored in full once a month, centron charges no additional costs.

For comparison: IONOS charges €0.007/GB for storage and Hetzner €6.49 per terabyte – in both cases plus outgoing traffic. For a full monthly restore of 1 TB, that charge is added there; at centron it is not.

How much does object storage cost in Germany?

With centron, S3 Object Storage costs €0.02 per gigabyte per month, and you are only charged for the storage you actually use. The minimum charge is €5.00 per month, which corresponds to 250 GB. A terabyte therefore costs around €20 per month – including data transfer.

Is outgoing traffic charged for?

Not with centron. Incoming and outgoing traffic are completely free of charge, regardless of volume. This is the key difference compared to providers such as IONOS (€0.007/GB for storage) or Hetzner (€6.49/TB), which charge for outgoing traffic separately – for data-intensive applications, this cost often far exceeds the cost of storage alone.

Is the storage S3-compatible?

Yes. Centron Object Storage is S3-compatible; existing tools, SDKs and backup solutions work without any modifications. All you need to connect is an endpoint, an access key and a secret key.

What level of availability has been promised?

The service level agreement guarantees a monthly availability of 99.9 per cent for centron Object Storage. The details set out in the relevant service level agreement take precedence over any marketing claims.

Where is the data stored?

Exclusively in Germany, in centron’s own, redundantly configured data centre in Hallstadt near Bamberg. The platform is certified to ISO 27001 on the basis of IT-Grundschutz; ccloud³ and Managed Cloud have been awarded an unrestricted BSI C5:2020 Type 1 attestation.

Is object storage suitable as a backup destination?

Yes, that’s one of the most common use cases. As restores on centron do not incur any additional traffic costs, even large restores remain within budget. In combination with cBacks, backups can be written automatically to Object Storage.

Are there charges per enquiry?

No. GET, PUT and LIST operations are not charged separately at centron. You are only charged for the storage space used.
