Any change with a return ticket

Snapshots capture the exact state of VMs and volumes – turning risky moments into manageable steps.

Lightning-fast backup

A snapshot is created in seconds – whilst the system is running, without any downtime and without any impact on the performance of your applications.

Immediate recovery

If an update fails, you can restore the previous state in no time at all – as if nothing had happened.

Clones & Templates

Create identical clones from snapshots for staging environments or templates for new servers – in a reproducible and consistent manner.

Part of your backup strategy

Snapshots capture moments; cBacks performs regular backups: together, they form a strategy comprising quick recovery points and long-term backups.

The moment before the change

Updates, migrations and testing without the stress

Before an operating system update, a database upgrade or a deployment: take a snapshot, and you’ve got a way back. Development teams clone production environments for realistic testing – and discard them once they’ve been used. This way, caution becomes routine rather than a hindrance.

Server snapshots – costs and functionality

How much do snapshots cost at centron?

Snapshots are free of charge for all ccloud³ VMs at centron. A snapshot freezes the entire system state in a matter of seconds – without any maintenance windows and without the need to shut down the machine. If created before an update, the previous state can be restored in seconds should any problems arise. Furthermore, snapshots serve as templates for production-like test environments or as a ‘golden image’ from which new servers with identical configurations can be created. It is important to note the distinction: a snapshot is a snapshot of the same system, not a backup stored in a separate location – cBacks or Managed Backup are intended for that purpose.

Snapshots FAQ

Everything you need to know about snapshots

What is a snapshot?

A snapshot of the exact state of a VM or volume – created in seconds, whilst the system is running. You can revert to this state at any time.

How do snapshots differ from backups?

Snapshots capture moments and are stored close to the system – perfect for quick rollbacks. Backups using cBacks run automatically on a scheduled basis and provide long-term protection. A good strategy combines both.

Do I need to stop the VM to take a snapshot?

No. Snapshots are taken whilst the system is running, without any downtime. To ensure the highest possible consistency of database states, a brief write freeze is recommended, depending on the application – we’d be happy to advise you.

Can I create a new VM from a snapshot?

Yes. Snapshots serve as the basis for identical clones – for example, for staging environments, testing or as templates for new servers with the same configuration.

How much do snapshots cost?

You will be charged for the storage space used by snapshots. You can calculate the costs for your usage profile transparently using the price calculator.
