What do RTO and RPO stand for?

RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum tolerable downtime – how long can it take for systems to be back up and running? RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum tolerable data loss – how old can the last recoverable point be? Both figures determine which disaster recovery (DR) technology you need: one backup per night means an RPO of up to 24 hours; replication every 15 minutes reduces it to a maximum of 15 minutes; real-time replication in a high-availability pool reduces downtime to seconds.

What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?

A backup is a copy of data – disaster recovery is the complete process of restoring operations following a failure. Backups are one component of this; others include replication, failover infrastructure, defined RTO/RPO targets, runbooks and well-rehearsed procedures. Those who rely solely on backups will know, in the event of a crisis, that the data exists – but they will not know how quickly the business can be up and running again.

What RPO and RTO are realistically achievable?

With daily backups (cBacks), the RPO is up to 24 hours, and recovery takes several hours depending on the volume of data. With cProtect, the RPO is reduced to a maximum of 15 minutes, with failover taking just seconds. Does disaster recovery also protect against ransomware?

How often should a disaster recovery plan be tested?
